Peter Winnett (illustrator)

Peter Winnett was born in 1969 and graduated from NSCAD university in 1993.
He resides in Vancouver creating art and design for international brands.
Peter Winnett fashion illustration are just amazing -  He’s been commissioned by DKNY and L’Oreal, to name a few and his work oozes raw sexuality with laid back playfulness.
With a use of his pen and some water colours, Peter creates a fantasy world of gorgeously dangerous women. His work has that delicate blend of sexuality and laid back playfulness that few can achieve.
eter Winnett immediately impressed me with his intelligence. Intimately self-aware, he has incredible insight into his strengths, his journey as an artist and the details of his business. Then with the flip of a coin his artwork shows an entirely different personality. From the vivid multi-media painting on the wall above his sofa to the uninhibited flowing illustrations in his portfolio, there is a freedom of expression in his work that is entirely unexpected. Add in a life-long drive for excellence and you have the dichotomy that defines this artist.

In elementary school Winnett showed a talent for drawing and became an excellent mimic of different styles. In a school-wide art competition his version of the Jaws movie poster was selected first place by popular vote. "The school loved it because it tapped into something everyone was aware of." Post high school he eventually settled on a degree in Communication and Design from NSCAD (an art school in Halifax) and then headed to Vancouver ready to begin his career.

Winnett's degree opened the door to contract work in media/advertising and he initially explored positions such as Art Director and Creative Director. His strong drawing skills were often used to create comps - illustrations used as storyboards in advertising campaigns. Comps he created for beauty clients such as Helene Curtis began to get increasing attention so he signed with an agent in New York to see where it might lead. A year of filling out his portfolio and building from the bottom up paid off when he landed a major contract with Publicis ad agency in NYC for the L'Oreal account. While very lucrative, the contract required him to work at a level he was totally unprepared for. "As an example, I would show them an image that took a week to do. They loved it and the creative director felt it was totally L'Oreal. Then they said they needed 40 more and I had 6 days to do it - GO!" Since that time he has developed an extensive and varied client list. He produced an oil painting that was used in a Xmas ad for Coca Cola, a line drawings for a DKNY jean promotion and an editorial spread in Nuvo magazine (just to name a few). Variety is one of the perks of this profession.

Winnett's illustration work is usually produced in one of two ways. It normally begins with a line drawing in ink. He can then choose to work manually to refine and correct by tracing it up to15 times while adjusting the image with each new version or the drawing can then be scanned into a computer and finished digitally Acrylics applied like water colour are the final optional step. Driving all his images is a love for beauty and aesthetics - a search for the ideal. "All the energy and passion I would pour into a love relationship is the same energy and passion I pour into my art. That's what creates excellence." Probably the most interesting aspect of his work is that most contact is through e-mail and teleconferencing. He has never met his agent and rarely meets his clients in person.

After more than 15 years in the industry Winnett sees a change coming. "Hand skills and craft - their days are numbered and they're becoming museum pieces. If you want to continue to innovate or to have a career, the area that has the highest value is ideas. Ideas are harder to come by." As he plans for this future you can be sure he will use both sides of the coin in choosing the right direction. To view more of Peter Winnett's work visit his website at www.winnett.net.
